Ipamorelin is a synthetic pentapeptide, Aib-His-D-2-Nal-D-Phe-Lys-NH2. CAS 170851-70-4, formula C38H49N9O5, molecular weight 711.9. Novo Nordisk’s Raun et al. described it in 1998 as “the first selective growth hormone secretagogue” (Eur J Endocrinol, PMID 9849822). It isn’t a SARM, and it isn’t related to the androgen receptor at all.

Why “selective” matters
Raun’s group found that ipamorelin released GH from rat pituitary cells with potency close to GHRP-6. The interesting part came in swine: GHRP-6 and GHRP-2 both raised ACTH and cortisol, but ipamorelin didn’t, even at more than 200 times its ED50 for GH release. That selectivity is why it is used as a comparator against less selective GHS-R1a agonists.
The intranasal route in the literature
The reason this format exists in research is a 1998 Novo Nordisk rat study. Johansen et al. (Xenobiotica, PMID 9879640) compared several peptide secretagogues by route and estimated intranasal bioavailability of ipamorelin at about 20%, with clearance about five times lower than GHRP-6 and mainly renal excretion. Later anti-doping work by Semenistaya et al. (Drug Test Anal 2015, PMID 25869809) identified ipamorelin and its (1-4) free acid metabolite in urine after nasal administration, which is useful if you need analytical targets.
For context on systemic kinetics, Gobburu et al. (Pharm Res 1999, PMID 10496658) modeled IV infusion data and reported a terminal half-life of about 2 hours. A phase 2 IV study for postoperative ileus (Beck et al., 2014, PMID 25331030; NCT00672074) found no significant difference from placebo. Ipamorelin is not approved for any use.
